ICC Test Status

Test Cricket

Test matches are the highest level of cricket although, statistically, their data forms part of first-class cricket. Matches are played between national representative teams with "Test status", as determined by the International Cricket Council.

Test cricket is the longest form of the sport of cricket and is considered its highest standard. Test matches are played between national representative teams with "Test status", as determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The two teams of 11 players play a four-innings match, which may last up to five days. It is generally considered the most complete examination of teams' playing ability and endurance. The origin of the name Test stems from the long, gruelling match being a "test" of the relative strength of the two sides.

As of July 2016, ten ICC nations have Test status, the most recently promoted being Bangladesh in 2000. Zimbabwe's Test status was voluntarily suspended, because of poor performances between 2006 and 2011but it returned to competition in August 2011

Previous Cretirea
Earlier the conditional rule for playing in the test matches was to defeat five regular test playing nations. Once a team achieved that feat it would then be in the hands of an internal ICC committee which would take the call as to whether the team deserved the full-member status or not.

Current Cretirea
The criterion now is well defined and comprehensive. In January 2014, during the historic ICC meeting in Dubai, the pathway for new potential test nations was laid out with the winners of the next round of the ICC Intercontinental Cup playing 5-day match against the bottom rank test nation in 2018. If the Associate team defeats the test nation, then they could be added as the new test country and be given full membership.

While it remains to be seen whether Ireland or for that matter Afghanistan can be consistent enough for the next three years, the current ICC policy of granting test status to associate nations is a step in the right direction. The ball in now in associate nations’ court and they will need to maintain a churn rate of international cricketers higher than that of the lowest ranked test teams in order to go in through the elite test door.
