ICC MEMBER IRELAND

Ireland Cricket

In Ireland, Cricket is governed by Irish Cricket Union (ICU), it is an associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) with One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) status. It represents cricket for both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is usually described as a leading associate nation.

ICC Associate member

*Ireland granted the associate status in 1993 & played their 1st ODI fixture against England in 2006.
*Ireland holds a massive record with most no. of 300+ runs targets succesfully chased in world cup.

Introduction
Cricket was introduced into Ireland by the English in the later stages of the 18th Century. The first record of a cricket match being played is in Phoenix Park in 1792 between a Colonel Lennox XI and an All Ireland team under the guidance of Major Hobart. In the 1830s, the game began to spread; many of the clubs which were founded in the following 30 years are still in existence today. The first Irish national team played in 1855 against The Gentlemen of England in Dublin and three years later it beat the MCC by an innings and 10 runs.

Aim to acquire Test Staus
Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom had sent a letter to the ICC in 2009 stating his board's intention to apply for Full Membership, it's potential pathway and to seek clarification on the process. In January 2012 Warren Deutrom publicly declared Ireland's ambition to play Test cricket by 2020. Deutrom also unveiled the new strategic plan for Irish cricket to 2015. Their ambition has got significant support from many cricket pundits. After significant buzz, ICC confirmed in 2015 that Ireland will be granted Test status in 2019 should they win the 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup and beat the 10th ranked test nation in a four-match test series in 2018.

Domestic Cricket
In Irish Cricket, There are four separate provincial unions - Northern Cricket Union, North West Cricket Union, Leinster Cricket Union and Munster. These all play their own individual league and cup competitions from senior right down to junior level. Cricket Ireland organises the premier club cricket competition in Ireland, the Irish Senior Cup.

International Cricket
Ireland has a tremendous record in international cricket as it has gained a number of international scalps over the years, defeating the West Indies on no fewer than three occasions in 1928, 1969 and 2004, In 2007 Ireland's performance in their inaugural World Cup took many pundits by surprise, when they reached Super-8 stage by defeating Pakistan & a tied game against Zimbabwe, It also made a huge shock in CWC 2011 as well when it defeated England thanks to Kevin o Brien. Now it is mostly reffered to as giant killers during world cups.

Women's Cricket
An amazing fact: The Irish women's team entered the international arena well before their male counterparts, playing their first ODIs in a three match series against Australia in 1987, a full 19 years before the men's team would make their ODI debut. Irish women's team played their first & only Test match, beating Pakistan by an innings inside two days in Dublin in 2000. Women's cricket was amalgamated into the ICU in 2003. Until now The national women's side has played in five ICC Women's World Cups to date - the most recent of which was in 2005 and were also part of ICC womens WT20 2016 & they have twice won the European Championships in 2005 and 2009.

Ranking
As of 22 August 2016, Ireland is ranked 12th in ODIs, 15th in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and 10th in Women's rankings by the ICC. William Porterfield is  current captain of the team in I-Cup, ODI & T20I.
